The science behind them is genuinely interesting — but the gap between laboratory research and proven cosmetic benefit is substantial.

What Are Growth Factors?

Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins that regulate cellular growth, proliferation, and differentiation. In the body, they act as chemical messengers, signalling cells to perform specific functions like wound healing, tissue repair, and collagen production.

What to Look For

If you’re considering growth factor products:

Prefer bioengineered/recombinant growth factors over “conditioned media” or plant stem cell derivatives. Recombinant growth factors are chemically defined; conditioned media contains unknown concentrations of variable content.

Look for appropriate packaging — airless pumps and opaque containers protect fragile proteins better than jars or droppers.

Research the brand’s claims. Companies that disclose concentrations, cite specific studies, or explain their stability testing are more credible than those relying purely on stem cell marketing language.

Consider combination products. Growth factors combined with proven ingredients (peptides, antioxidants) may offer benefits from the established ingredients even if the growth factors underperform.

The Plant Stem Cell Clarification

“Plant stem cell” skincare deserves specific attention because it trades on confusion.

Plant stem cells cannot produce human growth factors. The concept of plant “stem cells” is itself somewhat misleading — plant cells have different characteristics than animal stem cells.

Any benefit from plant stem cell products would not be due to growth factor activity. They might contain antioxidants or other beneficial compounds, but the growth factor marketing angle is scientifically unfounded.

When you see “apple stem cells” or “grape stem cells” paired with growth factor claims, recognise the marketing misdirection.

Realistic Expectations

Growth factors remain an interesting but unproven category in cosmetic skincare. The theoretical basis is sound — these proteins do regulate cellular behaviour — but the practical challenges of topical delivery remain largely unsolved.

What they might do:

  • Provide some antioxidant or barrier benefits from the formulation
  • Offer modest improvements in skin quality over time

What they probably don’t do:

  • Dramatically rejuvenate aged skin
  • Replace the proven benefits of retinoids
  • Justify 5-10x price premiums over established products

The Bottom Line

Growth factors represent genuine biological complexity being packaged for cosmetic purposes. The science is real; the cosmetic applications remain speculative.

For most consumers, money spent on growth factor products would produce better results if redirected toward proven ingredients in well-formulated products. A consistent retinoid, vitamin C, and sunscreen routine with a basic moisturiser will likely outperform any growth factor product currently available.

If you have the budget and the curiosity, growth factor products won’t harm you and might provide some benefit. But approach them with appropriate skepticism about the gap between compelling science and proven skincare results.
